How to get 2dToolkit sprites behind unity ui objects??

Hi, I'm having a hard time with 2dtoolkit sprites always wanting to be on top of unity ui elements despite the ui elements being either lower in the hierarchy or further forward in Z...I've narrowed it down to the "BlendVertexColor" shader's blend mode...Using the "CutoutVertexColor" shader works how I want it but then the transparancy is lost.




Could you please help me?
