Data Driven Animations with previously created collections?

I know it's unsupported, but I was wondering if you could tell me if the Data Driven Collection code could create animation collections and fill it with clips from sprite collections made the traditional route with the editor. I get an error saying that the collection can't be found when I've tried, but I didn't know if that was because I was doing something wrong or the functionality was only intended to make animations after having coded the collection first.

The data driven system only knows about the stuff it has created.
